A Tax Clearance Certificate is a document issued either by the Federal Inland Revenue Service to a Corporate Tax Payer or State Inland Revenue Service to and individual Tax Payer certifying that a Company or an individual has paid all his take liabilities up to date within the period covered by the Certificate.

Tax Clearance Certificate usually lasts for 12 Months and expires at 31st December each year.

Obtaining a Tax Clearance Certificate can be easier than you think if a tax payer is up to date in respect of tax filings and payment of the relevant tax liabilities.

The following are the steps to obtaining a Tax Clearance Certificate:

For existing Companies:

1. Contact a Tax Consultant, usually a firm of Chartered Accountants.

2. Filing of tax returns containing audited accounts, tax computations         and payment of tax liabilities/evidence of payment (if any) up to                 date.

3. Filing for Value Added (VAT) up to date.

4.  Application for Tax Clearance at FIRS online Portal

5.   Following up with application with FIRS to get your TCC

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET YOUR TCC?

All things being equal, getting your Tax Clearance Certificate shouldn’t take more than two (2) weeks if your tax returns are filed up to date.
